What is in the data, stated plainly.
Knowing what an API cannot tell you matters as much as knowing what it can. This page describes the dataset behind every endpoint, and where it stops.

National coverage, including the territories people forget.
Coverage spans all six states, both mainland territories, and Other Territories such as Norfolk Island, Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands.
Coordinates are supplied in GDA2020, on EPSG:4326 axes, with latitude and longitude given to eight decimal places. There is no international fallback: an address outside Australia does not match, and the response says so.

A coordinate is only as precise as the thing it describes.
Every geocode carries a geocode_type saying what was actually measured. A property centroid sits inside the parcel. A street locality centroid only places the address on the right street. Read the type before you treat a coordinate as a doorstep.
| Geocode type | Addresses | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Property centroid | 10,363,205 | 64.98% |
| Frontage centre setback | 4,027,153 | 25.25% |
| Building centroid | 748,697 | 4.69% |
| Property access point setback | 343,657 | 2.15% |
| Street locality | 277,785 | 1.74% |
| Gap geocode | 109,009 | 0.68% |
| Property access point | 60,281 | 0.38% |
| Locality | 9,390 | 0.06% |
| Remaining types | 10,366 | 0.07% |
Known limitations.
Not postal certification
A match means the address exists in the national dataset. It does not mean Australia Post will deliver there. This service is not AMAS certified and derives nothing from the Postal Address File.
New addresses lag the ground
An address enters G-NAF once the relevant authority registers it. Newly subdivided lots and recent developments can be missing until a later release, no matter how real the building is.
Aliases and secondary records
Some addresses appear as aliases of a principal record, and units appear as secondary records under a primary. Responses carry alias_principal and primary_secondary so you can tell which you received.
Coverage is Australia only
There is no international fallback. An address outside Australia will not match, and the response says so rather than returning a nearby guess.
Attribution
Address data is derived from the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF) Core, published by Geoscape Australia and made available under its open licence terms. Geoscape Australia does not endorse this service. Licence conditions for redistributed address data are set out in the terms of service.
